Musical SupervisorPhil Edwards

Phil Edwards PortraitPhil Edwards was born and educated in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He went on to perform as a percussionist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and as a percussionist and keyboard player in many West End productions.

Phil became Musical Director of the U.K. national tour of ANNIE and subsequently fulfilled the same position in the West End production of STARLIGHT EXPRESS whose tour of Japan and Australia he also supervised. He went on to become the original Musical Director of the West End production of MISS SAIGON.

He works regularly as composer and arranger for T.V. and Radio in Great Britain including the annual B.B.C. programme SONG FOR CHRISTMAS and the documentary series with Frederick Forsyth SOLDIERS.

Radio work includes orchestrating Julian Slade’s TRELAWNEY. He has written and orchestrated several film scores including THE MOST DANGEROUS MOMENT. Phil scored the short original film CUPID broadcast on R.T.E., and also composed incidental music for the Las Vegas mega-show E.F.X.. He works as an arranger for several European pop bands, notably NATURAL BORN HIPPIES.

He was Musical Supervisor of the New Zealand production of CATS after which he returned to Germany as Musical Director of the first German production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT. He was the musical supervisor of STARLIGHT EXPRESS in London and Germany and the Hamburg production of CATS.

Phil was delighted and honoured to be appointed Musical Director and co -orchestrator of the original production of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER at the London Palladium, which subsequently had a two year run on Broadway.

He composed and producied music for the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. A fascinating and enjoyable recent project was as Musical Director and vocal coach for Vinnie Jones on his debut album RESPECT.

He is currently Musical Supervisor of the U.S. National Tours of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT, EVITA and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTA.R., the German production of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and the UK National Tour of STARLIGHT EXPRESS.

Phil is the Musical Supervisor and vocal coach for the current Bratz world tour.

He has worked extensively on several of Trisha Ward’s musicals with her including the award-winning NIGHTSHRIEK and has co-orchestrated the score of SLEEPING BEAUTY with Trisha for the world premiere in Dublin. He has helped create the music for all of the SLEEPING BEAUTY workshops at The Venue Leicester Square and Sadlers Wells.
